overview of louisiana strategy

The Louisiana study broadens the definition of cultural industries to include much more than just the nonprofit cultural institutions, but also:  self-employed artists — writers, performers, musicians, visual artists, and artisans; art and cultural components of educational institutions; businesses that produce goods and services involving the arts; businesses that service the arts community; traditional and new media; and cuisine.  The report explores the issues that concern any economic sector: workforce development, business development, research, finance, and markets.  Four industries are the focus of an in depth examination:  food and culinary arts, literary arts, music, and historic preservation industries.

The plan for nurturing Louisiana’s cultural economy provides specific strategies and actions that fall within four areas:

  • Supporting the origination and sustainability of authentic culture;

  • Enhancing the production capacity for cultural products;

  • Expanding the distribution and markets for cultural products; and

  • Fostering the support system of the cultural economy.
